From the Blurb:
Meet Sarah and David. Sarah and David are like any other couple. They met, they fell in love, but now they're on the verge of divorce. On a routine trip to the marriage counsellor, they notice a few odd things -- the lack of cars on the road, the missing security guard, and the fact that their counsellor, Dr Kelly, is ripping out her previous client's throat.
Meet the zombies. Now, Sarah and David are fighting for survival in the middle of the zombie apocalypse. But just because there are zombies, it doesn't mean your other problems go away. And if the zombies don't eat their brains, they might just kill each other.
The Review:
Sarah and David are about to head into yet another appointment with their relationship counselor, both unconvinced that it will do anything to save their marriage, when the zombie apocalypse hits. It's a generally pretty shit day.
My sister has been nagging me to read this book for so long, but for some reason I kept putting it off. Even though I love zombie novels and romance novels, I'm always a little hesitant when those two combine. I don't know why, but this book proved that I really do need to listen to my sister more often.
This book is a lot of fun on almost every level. There's some fabulous humor that will particularly appeal to lovers of zombie-fic, since it plays on a lot of the cliches, but there's also a good amount of action, seriousness and, of course, romance.
Sarah is sarcastic and pretty obnoxious - I related to her a lot (haha). David is rather annoying at the beginning, but he develops really well as a character, and I really loved the way these two developed and their romance got a lovely second chance even with all the zombie stuff happening at the same time. More importantly, it's properly hilarious.
I found it totally believable that these computer game/horror movie nerds would know intellectually how to handle an apocalypse... but... I was less convinced they would know how to shoot an actual gun or manage the pretty impressive fight moves they achieve mid zombie fight. I guess this is one of those times when you just have to let plausibility fly out the window for a bit of fun. It's worth it.
This is a hilarious, action packed, second chance love storyline set in the middle of a zombie apocalypse. The full story develops over a trilogy, with Book 2: Flip this Zombie and Book 3: Eat, Slay, Love.
Married with Zombies by Jesse Petersen is a science fiction romance, released by Orbit in 2010.
