From the Blurb:
Return to a world of secrets, scandal, and temptation. Read the second novel in the sizzling Reckless and Real series from NYT bestselling author Lexi Ryan...
Something Real is book 2 of the Reckless and Real series and intended to be read after book 1, Something Reckless. This book concludes Liz and Sam’s story.
After everything blew up on Christmas, Liz walked away from me, and I let her. She said she needed space and a chance to pursue her dreams. But we both knew she was running from the mess she made. Now the political campaign she used as an excuse to leave is bringing us back together and I’m proving to her what she really needs—not just the hot nights, greedy hands, and undeniable physical chemistry. What she really needs is something real. What she really needs…is me.
The Review:
Note: Something Real is not a standalone novel and this review will contain spoilers for the previous books in the series. If you haven't read them, you can read our review of Book 0.5, Something Wild, here, and our review of Book 1, Something Reckless, here.
So things got a bit effed up for Sam and Liz at the end of Something Reckless, after Liz discovered the guy she'd been sexting was not, in fact, the love of her life, but instead his father. Yeah, awkward. Since then neither Liz nor Sam have been coping all that well. To make matters worse, Sam has been pulled into a political sex scandal/blackmail plot thanks to past mistakes and a bitch named Sabrina. Liz believes Sam is now engaged to Sabrina, Sam believes Liz is dating her neighbor George, and basically everyone is sad, horny and frustrated.
Liz remains my favorite Lexi Ryan character. I previously loved that she tries so hard but she's just a little bit hopeless. In this installment I liked that she gets the chance to control a few situations rather than just letting things happen to her, though that occasionally means using her neighbor, George. He's totally sweet-sexy and very into Liz, but, of course, she only has eyes for Sam.
Sam is as naughty and sexy as ever, but his role in Something Real is a tad frustrating. He spends a lot of the novel getting played by other characters and, frankly, not enough time playing with Liz.
The scenes when Sam and Liz are together are scorching hot, as I expect from Lexi Ryan, but I found this novel to be the slowest I've read of her books, simply because there was too much going on without our hero and heroine being in scene together. The political blackmail plot was fine, but for me it meant there just wasn't quite enough Sam and Liz time. I wanted more of them getting down and dirty and it's possible I also kinda missed the sexting between Liz and Riverrat69.
So this novel wasn't quite as addictive for me as the previous ones in the series (and other New Hope books), but it was still a satisfying end to Sam and Liz's romance and I love them as a couple. I've got high expectations for Lexi Ryan and consider all her books to be must-reads, but this one I read in two sittings instead of one.
Something Real by Lexi Ryan is a contemporary romance, released on March 3 2015. It is the second book in the Reckless and Real series. Book 0.5, Something Wild, is free on Amazon and you can read our review here.
